American Buffalo – 1 oz of 24-karat American gold

The American Buffalo Gold Coin is the flagship 24-karat bullion coin of the United States Mint. First issued in 2006, it was the first investment coin struck by the U.S. Mint in .9999 fine gold, giving investors access to an American legal-tender bullion coin containing one full troy ounce of virtually pure gold.

Each 1 oz American Buffalo contains 31.103 g of fine gold, has a purity of 999.9/1000 and carries a nominal face value of 50 US dollars. Its actual market value is determined primarily by the international price of gold together with the applicable bullion premium, rather than by its face value.

An American classic in pure gold

The design is based on sculptor James Earle Fraser's 1913 Type I Buffalo nickel, one of the most recognisable designs in the history of American coinage.

The obverse depicts the profile of a Native American alongside the inscription LIBERTY and the year of issue. The reverse features an American bison, together with the inscriptions identifying the United States of America, the $50 denomination, weight and .9999 FINE GOLD purity.

More than a century after Fraser's original design appeared on the five-cent coin, the American Buffalo translates that imagery into one troy ounce of 24-karat investment gold.
